Electricity flows in a series of peaks & troughs and it can be likened to waves during storms at sea.

If you hit the ‘on’ button when the wave is at its peak these extremes create stress on the components within your equipment. These stresses can cause items to fail, relays cannot always deal with the increased voltage. If you have ever switched on a light bulb and its blown instantly it was probably down to switching on when the flow of electricity was at its peak, too much for a bulb to handle.
